My Blueberry Nights.

I've never seen a Wong Kar Wai movie before, and I didn't know what to expect from this movie. Just that Norah Jones was debuting in it. I love her music. And the movie is spilling over with her beautiful voice.

My Blueberry Nights, very aptly named, firstly, is a very short film. Hardly stretching to an hour and a half. By the end of it, I wished it would go on and on and on and on and on... Well, you get the picture. It's just lovely.

The characters. Complex in their simplicity. A phenomenal cast. David Strathairn, after Good Night and Good Luck, this defines him. Like everyone else, his role is small in the movie. The fact that Wai is able to put together such a colorful blend of characters and churn out their individual stories so beautifully and in such a minute amount of time is amazing.

A special mention for certain bits and pieces of wonderful cinema. Scenes where you'd normally expect a man and a woman to be paired is nowhere there. Particularly the one with Rachel Weisz and Norah Jones. Both characters, quite clueless in their position. A sweet awkwardness. Comfort. Film-making brilliance. Absolutely beautiful. The movie jumps. Comforatably. From one setting to another. Natalie Portman, the versatility of her accents. You'll have to hear it to believe it. Jude Law. Silent, husky pretty-boy. Makes every second of screen-time memorable.

Every scene with Norah Jones just made me feel warm inside. She has amazing screen presence. Everyone in this film fits exactly the way it should. Its perfect. And the kiss at the end. It made me melt. I almost cried. I loved My Blueberry Nights. Kudos, Mr Wai. It was wonderful. Thank You.

8/10 for the acting. 9/10 for the directing. Straight A for the background score. Its Norah Jones' singing, man!!

anwesha said... now this particular review did almost compel me to watch the movie very soon..!Norah Jones debut is enough of a reason..she's a phenomenal singer and she as a debutante in the field of acting would be worth watching..and from your review it is quite clear that she certainly has lived up to the expectations of the people and has definitely not let YOU down--somebody who is one of the biggest movie buffs i have known and met;someone who can judge a movie to it's core!
Also, the movie doesn't seem to be a typical romantic story with budding romance between two people..I guess it is something quite different and worth watching..
Thank You for the very nicely written detailed review of this movie...I enjoyed reading it!

mmm...someone is in love!

only joking -- excellent review -- very intelligent for all that it's so passionate...who said love was blind?

In fact, I think this is one of your best reviews -- the writing's almost as attractive as you seem to have found the film. I particularly liked the way you described some of the characters/actors. Just a few words. Mostly adjectives. They made pictures. They made people.
